8/24/10

Last week was filled with a ton of great games. You can find recaps in the league pages. The MABL is very tight as five teams fight for four spots in the playoffs. A big shake up in the AABL as the Titans lose in the game of the week. The Peoria league looks great again, but the big story is the upstart A’s on Saturday. And what is up with the Angels no losses on Sunday, no wins on Saturday?

Game of the week recap:

We saw the Titans battle the Black Sox last week. The Black Sox coming away with a 6-1 win carried by their left handed starting pitcher. The game was close the whole night but the Titans would be let down time and time again by their offense. The Titans starting pitcher struck out 13 in 6 innings but got no help from his offense the Titans are now a game and a half behind the Black Sox in the AABL.

Jim with son Andrew

Balian has been a work horse this year for the Knights compiling a 10-2 record with 10 complete games a 2.32 era in 101 innings and striking out 87 to just 24 walks so far in the MABL summer league.

We asked Jim to talk to us about the best season of his 12 year adult career. “The group of guys we have this year has really helped, it’s easy to pitch when you have great gloves behind you.” Jim mentioned that he loved the group he was playing with that “This is the most dedicated group we have had; we are all focused on winning, and love playing the game.”

Jim credits a lot of his success to a change in delivery “I use a lot more submarine now then I did before”  Jim had a arm injury and had to find a new way to be effective “So now I mix it up a lot more.”

We couldn’t let Jim go with out asking him about the title of the world’s greatest wiffle ball player. “Well I started playing as a kid and I have had a lot of great opportunities because of it.” Jim is a 2 time national wiffle ball champion, and in 2007 got a chance to face N.L. batting Champ Freddie Sanchez on the wiffle ball field. Sanchez went 1 for 16 in a simulated game.

Now a die hard D’backs fan he thanks his wife for him still playing, “She loves going to the game, and likes me playing because she knows what makes me happy.”

Look for Jim Balian to be a finalist for the Baseballpowerranking.com Arizona golden arm award.

8/16/10

So much to cover ,we are gonna call this the  “STATEMENT WEEK” for the Adult leagues in AZ. But first a wild week just passed, as 7 of our top 10 teams lost this last week. Including both defending champs in Peoria and the league leaders in the AABL and the MABL.

Game of the week recap:

We were on the west side of town last weekend, to see a rematch from the spring Sunday league championship in Peoria. The Angels would get amazing pitching and hold the Phx 5-0′s off. The Angels win 3-2. The Angels are now the only undefeated team in the Sunday section of the Peoria league. The Angels pitching would keep the usually big offense of the 5-0′s in line and the Angels found just enough offense of their own to secure the win.

This weeks power rankings are as followed:

#1 Phunk

Ok so maybe they didn’t play for the last few months, but they did have a perfect season in Tempe and after this week no reason not to think they might be the best team in town.

#2 Diamond Jaxx

Even though the Diamond Jaxx are in second place in their own league, you cant deny that they are the hottest team in town. The Jaxx have won 8 of 9,5 in a row including a 8-4 win over the Mashers last week. Monsoon and Knights on the schedule this week.

#3 Chandler Titans

A loss knocks the Titans from our top spot,as they fell 10-3 to the Lumber Jacks. The Titans rebounded with a 9-0 win over the Channel Cats. A tough 3 game stretch on the docket this week as the Titans will face The Cabanas, Black Sox, and KPTZ Assault.

#4 PHX 5-0′s

A tough loss to the Angels in the game of the week 3-2 takes the 5-0′s to 3 and 1 in the Peoria Sunday league. One game this week verses the Isotopes.

#5 Zona Knights

Another tough loss this weekend for the Knghts as they were downed by the Land Sharks 7-3. The Knights remain win less in August and have seen their lead in the MABL pennant race shrink to just one game. A’s and Diamond Jaxx on the schedule this week.

#6 Angels

These guys play more than any other team in town, so we decided to reward them. A 3-2 record this week was less than perfect, but a 3 and 0 mark in the Peoria Sunday league and a spot in the Victory Lane championship will excuse a 0 and 2 start to the Saturday leg of the Peoria season. 5 games again this week for the Angels, Stealth Tuesday night for the Victory Lane title, Then the Brew Crew and Dirtbags Saturday capped off by the Reds and Dodgers Sunday.

#7 KPTZ Assault

The Assault posted 2 wins over Hazelwoods 7-1 then over the Lumber Jacks 8-1. Titans and Black Sox this week.

#8 Brew Crew

Tough start to a 3 peat as the Brew Crew split their games this week. Beating arch rival Dirtbags 6-4, before dropping one to the upstart A’s 6-2. The Crew will face The Bushwackers and Angels this week.

#9 Bushwackers

The always competitive Bushwackers got off to a good start 2-0 in the Peoria Saturday league. With wins over the Padres 12-0 and the Orioles 5-3

#10 Black Sox

After a surprising 10-5 lost to the Indians the Sox will try to rebound against  the Assault Titans and Cabanas this week.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

Go ahead you tell us what the best game this week is. So many good ones you got options. First their is the battle for first in the MABL Knights v. Diamond Jaxx  Sunday morning in Peoria. You got the Victory Lane championship Thursday night Angels  v. Stealth. Friday night is a rematch of the spring Saturday championship in Peoria Brew Crew v. Bushwackers. Sunday Angels Dodgers a rematch of the forth of July championship. As for us we will be at the Black Sox Titans game 8/18/2010 at 7 pm at Indian Bend park field 4. This is just one of the great games the AABL has this week as all three of the top teams in the league play each other this week.

8/9/10

The Peoria Saturday league still hasn’t started and teams seem to be getting a little anxious, however the Sunday part of the league got off to a great start. The AABL had the marquee match up of their season to this point. And the # 1 team doesn’t win. Tons of action all around town last week.

Game of the week recap:

Last weeks game of the week featured the best of the AABL.  The Titans Would hand the KPTZ Assault their first loss of the season. The Assault failed to capitalize on a bases loaded no outs(with the 2,3,4 hitters up)situation in the third. The Titans would make them pay, taking the lead in the forth and never surrendering it. The Titans were carried by their larger than life starting pitcher who went 8 allowing only 1 earned run. Titan win 11-5,and improve to 5 and 0 in the AABL.

This weeks power rankings are as followed:

#1 Chandler Titans

The Titans were very impressive again this week with a win over the KPTZ Assault 11-5. They improve to 5 and 0 in the AABL,and are allowing just 3.4 runs per game. They make their first appearance at number1 on our list. The Titans will take on the Channel Cats this week.

#2 Zona Knights

The Knights fall from the top spot after a 3 week run at number 1. A disappointing tie this week against the Twins is the cause of the slide 6-6. The Knights are now 2.5 games up in the race for the MABL pennant,at 13-3-1. Knights take on the Land Sharks this weekend.

#3 Phx 5-0′s

The 5-0′s got 2 wins Sunday in Peoria beating the Isotopes 11-0 and rallying to beat the Reds 5-4. The 5-0′s will take on The Angels(game of the week) and the Outlaws this Sunday.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

The game of the week will take us to the west valley Sunday at 4 30 at Peoria Sports Complex field P 6, as the 5-0′s will take on the Angels in a rematch of last years Sunday league championship. Both teams are undefeated, and this could showcase maybe the 2 best teams in what might be the best league in town this year top to bottom.  The game should feature great pitching as both teams are expected to throw an ace.

8/2/10

The weather here in the valley decided not to cooperate this week,so what was suppose to be the busiest week of the year fizzled for the most part. All leagues will schedule make up dates for the canceled  games.

Game of the week recap:

Just like most games in town our game of the week was postponed. A make up date has not been set yet.

This weeks power rankings are as followed:

#1 Zona Knights

The Knights were one of the few teams to sneak a game in this week, beating the Jays 22-3. Improving to 13-3 in the MABL. The Knights now hold a 2 game lead in the MABL pennant race. The Knights have the Twins on the schedule this week. The Knights have scored 50 runs in their last 3 games

The winner of this one will have the inside track to the AABL pennant.

7/26/10

The City of Peoria released their schedule, which is packed with great teams in both leagues. For more coverage and predictions see league page.

Game of the week recap:

The game of the week pit two MABL contenders and two Baseball Power Ranking’s top ten teams against each other. Both the Land Sharks and Diamond Jaxx would get stellar pitching from their starters, and the Diamond Jaxx would hold on to a 3-2 victory. The loss drops the Land Sharks to 9-6 in MABL play this season, and down to forth place in the standings. The Land Sharks now find themselves three games back(of first) with just seven games to play. The Diamond Jaxx move into sole possession of third now.

7/19/10

With the two large private leagues in full swing,we here at Baseball Power Ranking are considering going to post twice a week in the future. We will keep you posted.

Game of the week recap:

For last weeks game of the week,we went to the AABL to see the Scottsdale Scorpions take on the Chandler Titans. This was a one sided affair to say the least. The Titans took an early led and cruised to a 8-2 victory. The Titans were carried by great pitching as 3 pitchers combined to work the nine innings. The Scorpions were never close and the Titans look to be the early favorite in the AABL.

This weeks power rankings are as followed:

#1 Zona Knights

Making their debut at the number 1 spot the Zona Knights are the hottest team in town. Beating the AZ legends over the weekend 4-2 and crushing Majerle’s Mashers 18-6,the Knights moved in to sole possession of 1st place in the MABL.

#2 Brew Crew

We think the Brew Crew might still be the best team but no games in a month drops the 2 time defending Peoria champs and Tempe runner-up to the 2 hole.

#3 Chandler Titans

We were impressed by the Titans win in the game of the week and we are pegging them as the favorite in the AABL

#4 Phunk

Again we see an idle current champ drop a few spots. The 2010 season may be over for the Tempe champs.

#5 Phx 5-0′s

Peoria’s two time defending Sunday league champs start their defense on 8/1/2010

#6 AZ Legends

#9 Diamond Jaxx

The Diamond Jaxx return to the list after winning 2 over the week and improving to 9-5 in the MABL.

#10 Black Sox

The Black Sox are out of the gate hot,and look to have improved their level of play from a few months ago. 2-0 in the AABL

GAME OF THE WEEK:

This week we are going out to Hohokam Stadium on 7/25/2010 at 9 AM as the AZ Land Sharks take on the Diamond Jaxx. The teams have matching 9-5 records and are tied for 3rd place in the MABL. The Land Sharks won the last meeting 8-1 but the Diamond Jaxx are hot winning 5 of the last 6. Strength on strength as the Diamond Jaxx put runs up in bunches scoring nearly 10 runs a game, and the Land Sharks have not allowed more than 5 runs in a game since 5/12/10( a 12 game span)

7/12/10

With the AABLhaving their first week of games, the MABL in full swing and the Peoria schedule coming out in two weeks lots to cover here at Baseball Power Ranking so check in for updates.

Game of the week recap:

The game of the week featured the Zona Knights and their 53 consecutive innings without an earned run verses the hot hitting Diamond Jaxxin the MABL. The game showcased two tough guy performances as both starting pitchers threw complete games in 110 degree heat.(WOW) In the end another great outing by Knights starting pitcher and player of the game Jim Balian would carry the Knights to a 6-4 victory. The earned run streak came to an end,but the Knights were still happy with the outcome.

This weeks power rankings are as followed:

# 1 Brew Crew

Good thing the Peoria league starts soon, were forgetting how good these guys are.

# 2 Phunk

Still the last champ to be crowned around the valley.

# 3 AZ Legends

The Legends are rolling again winning 16-5 over the weekend and are still currently in first place in the MABL,the big test comes next week against the Knights.

#4 Scottsdale Scorpions

After winning their AABL opener 4-3 over the Lumber Jacks, the Scorpions will have a chance to shine against the Tucsan Titans in the game of the week 7/14/2010

#5 Zona Knights

Ok were convicted. Coming  off another big win 6-4 over the Diamond Jaxx the Knights have a chance to move into a tie for first in the MABL with a win this weekend over the Legends. The Knights may have the best pitching in the state top to bottom….they’ll need it to reach the top.

#6 Tucson Titans

The Titans will open their AABL season against the Scottsdale Scorpions in the game of the week 7/14/2010

#7 Phx 5-0′s

The 5-0′s pick back up in about 3 weeks. Wonder if they will still be on the list?

#8 AZ Landsharks

The Landsharks cruised to a 6-1 victory over the A’s last week. Will face the Arizona Durham Bulls 7/17/2010

#9 Angels

The Angels had a busy week, winning 3 of 4  a second place finish in the Victory Lane 4th tournament and a league win helps the Halo’s move up a spot.

#10 Bushwackers

Maybe were just excited about the Peoria season, but it’s still been over a month since the perennial west valley contender has lost.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

This weeks game of the week pits the 2 super powers from the AABL as the Scottsdale Scorpions face the Tucson Titans at 7 pm 7/14/2010 at Indian Bend Park field #4.This is an early season showcase of the best the AABL has to offer The Scorpions won their opener and this will be the first game of the season for the Titans. The winner has the early advantage in the chase for the regular season pennant.

7/2/10

With no league games scheduled for this weekend we went to post early.  The MABL is the only large league playing currently so it’s kind of a slow week but, never fear The AABL kicks-off 7/7/2010 and the Peoria league starts up again 7/31/2010

Game of the week recap

The game of the week featured a MABL battle and a battle it was. The Legends would take an early lead, but the Land sharks would get a gem out of their starting pitcher who threw the whole 9 not allowing a run after the 3rd inning the Land sharks would hold on for the win 6-3

This weeks power rankings are as followed:

# 1 Brew Crew

The 2 time Peoria champs start their title defense on 7/31/2010

# 2 Phunk

The Phunk still haven’t lost in 2010 a perfect 10-0 in a loaded Tempe league.

#3 Tucson Titans

Titans start their AABL season on 7/14/2010 against the Scottsdale Scorpions

#4 AZ Legends

Coming off a loss the Legends have still won 5 out of 6 and are still atop the http://www.baseballpowerranking.com/arizona-mabl

#5 PHX 5-0′s

The 5-0′s will try to make it 3 in a row in Peoria this summer

#6 Scottsdale Scorpions

The Scorpions will square off against the Lumber Jacks(7/7/2010) to start the AABL season in style.

#7 Zona Knights

After a tough lost to the A’s things get no easier as the Knights have a tough one this week verses the Diamond Jaxx. Lots of questions about the Knight offense scoring  just 11 combined runs over their last 5 games.

#8 Diamond Jaxx

Winners of 3 in a row and clubbing 13 runs in each of those wins the Diamond Jaxx maybe back to championship form. Look for them to shoot up the list if they can find a way to beat the Zona Knights on the 11Th.

#9 AZ Land Sharks

Having won 7 out of 8 and wins over the AZ Legends and the Diamond Jaxx and with the MABL being the only league going the Land Sharks make their first appearance on the list and help the MABL be this weeks big winner with 4 teams in the top 10

#10 Angels

With a tie this week against K4 Sports in the Victory Lane league the Angels continue to be very close to falling out of the top 10

GAME OF THE WEEK:

We are going back to the MABL again for our game of the week. The Zona Knights will be facing the Diamond Jaxx 7/11/2010 at 10 a.m. at Indian School Park field 4. The Diamond Jaxx took the first meeting 5-1, and would seem to be rolling as of late, scoring 13 runs in each of their last 3 games all wins. The Knights may be heading the other direction losing last week, and only scoring 11 runs combined in their last 5 games. It would seem to be a real strength verses weakness in this one. The game is a battle for second place in the MABL and top ten superiority on our top 10 should be a good one.

6/28/10

This week was dominated by championship week in the City of Tempe league. The league did not disappoint please see the Tempe League page for league recap.  Just one opinion but adult baseball may have taken a small step back this weekend as I was confused by a few things I saw at the games Sunday. First why is an AABL all-star team playing in the B league in Tempe?(and not winning it) Second where was the pitching in the A league Championship game, it was a very thrilling game but a 13-14 finale in a championship game? We would like to hear from you on this.

Game of the week recap

The game of the week was just that as the Phunk and Brew Crew played another nail bitter in the City of Tempe A league championship game the Phunk holding on to a 14-13 victory. Game details on the Tempe league page.

This Weeks Power Rankings are as followed:

# 1 Brew Crew

Stock down for the Brew Crew this week after losing to the Phunk in the Tempe Championship but the rankings are about the full body of work and theirs is still the best…..for now

# 2 Phunk

Stock up for the Tempe champs but don’t expect them to last long as Tempe is the only league they currently play in, so no games for about 9 months for the Phunk

# 3 AZ Legends

These fast risers have taken the MABL  by storm and even more impressive then their 9-1 record was the 2-1 victory over defending league champs the Diamond Jaxx. Lets see if the Legends have what it takes to make it to the top.

#4 Tucson Titans

The Titans prepare to defend their AABL title starting 7/7/2010

#5 Zona Knights

The Knights are off to a hot start in the MABL and beat the league leading legends earlier this year 8-2, but a loss to the Diamond Jaxx and a surprising loss to the Monsoon makes one wonder if the Knights can score enough runs to win when it counts.

#6 Phx 5-0′s

The 5-0′s drop a few spots with no games played lately, but begin their Peoria league title defense 8/1/10

#7 Scottsdale Scorpions

Us here at Baseball Power Ranking cant wait til the Scorpions start their AABL title defense on 7/7/10 we expect this team to become one of the elite.

#8 Diamond Jaxx

Although off to a slow start in the MABL the Diamond Jaxx have some nice wins and as mentioned earlier its about the body of work.

#9 D’backs

The Tempe season is over with and no title looks like the 2 time Tempe champs could be falling fast

#10 Angels

A strong showing in the Victory lane league has the Angels holding on to our last spot…but just barely

GAME OF THE WEEK :7/1/2010

The game of the week features 2 MABL contenders as the league leading Az legends take on the Arizona Landsharks 7PM at Tempe Diablo Stadium field 1. The Legends got the best of the Landsharks earlier in the season 10-6,but the Landsharks have won 6 of their last 7 and maybe playing their best baseball currently.

6/21/10

The inaugural power rankings are as followed:

#1 Brew Crew
After back to back Peoria championships and a tournament championship the Brew Crew has a spot in the Tempe A league championship game Sunday night that’s more than enough to earn them the top spot this week.

#2 Diamond Jaxx
A late run in the spring MSBL ‘s top league earns the Diamond Jaxx the 2 spot

#3 PHX 5-0′s
Back to back titles in Peoria is a remarkable achievement but no activity outside of the west valley and a feeling that the Saturday league in Peoria is deeper has the 5-0′s at third

#4 Tucson Titans
After winning most of everything the AABL puts on,the consensus is the Titans may be the best team the private leagues have to offer.

#5 D’backs
After winning the first two Tempe leagues, even an early exit in the Tempe league playoffs this year can’t throw the D’backs out of our top ten.

#6 Angels
With no recent championship success the Angels have been relegated to making life difficult for teams all around the valley, but a Peoria league championship appearance and some success at Victory Lane lands the Halo’s at six on our first list

#7 Scottsdale Scorpions
The Scorpions have dominated the AABL in their first season, and expect them to shoot up the list if the team stays together.

#8 Phunk
With the first strong season under their belt, undefeated and playing the Brew Crew in the Tempe league championship look for the Phunk to become a regular in the top ten.

#9 BushWackers
After much success in the regular season in the Peoria league the team lost it’s bid for a first championship last spring but is on the verge of the breakthrough.

#10 Dirtbags
After instant success in reaching the Tempe league championship in 2009 the Dirtbags have continued to be a top tier team in the Peoria league.

GAME OF THE WEEK 6/27/2010
The Tempe league’s top level has it’s championship game this Sunday at 8:15 at Tempe Diablo field 1 as the Brew Crew square off against the Phunk. The two teams played to an 8-7 extra inning final the last game of the regular season the Phunk coming away with the hard fought Victory. Should be a great game if history is any indication as over the last 2 years the teams have played 3 times and are 1-1-1 and no one has ever won by more than 3 runs in the series. The Phunk will try to complete a perfect season as the Brew Crew tries to win both the Peoria and Tempe leagues a feat that has never before been accomplished.
